International scientific name

Leonurus quinquelobatus Gilib., 1793

Motherwort five-lobed(lat. Leonurus quinquelobatus) is a perennial herbaceous plant of the family Lamiaceae ( Lamiaceae).

Description

shoot tip with inflorescence

Perennial herbaceous plant 50–200 cm high, with a woody rhizome. The stem is tetrahedral, along the ribs with long grayish soft standing hairs. The leaves are palmately dissected, appressedly hairy, green above, paler below, finely, diffusely and appressedly hairy or glabrous on both sides. Stem leaves on long (7-12 cm) petioles, rounded, with a heart-shaped or truncated base, ⅔ five-dissected into oblong-wedge-shaped unequally coarsely toothed lobes. Bracts on short (1.5-2 cm) petioles, oblong-rhombic, with a wedge-shaped base, 3-lobed, with lanceolate, rarely serrated or entire lobes.

The flowers are collected in dense whorls in the axils of the upper leaves and form a long intermittent spike-shaped inflorescence at the ends of the stem and branches. Corolla two-lipped, densely white-pubescent, up to 12 mm long; the upper lip is purple-pink or pink-violet, the lower one is three-lobed, yellow in the middle, with purple speckles. Bracts awl-shaped, protruding hairy. The calyx is conical, almost naked, with five triangular-awl-shaped teeth, of which the two lower ones, more fused together, are bent down, with fruits often splayed and prickly. The fruit splits into 4 dark brown nuts 2.5-3 mm long, hairy at the top, olive green.

Chemical composition

Motherwort grass contains sugars, glycosides, alkaloids (up to 0.4%), essential oil (up to 0.05%), flavonoids (quercetin, rutin, quinqueloside, etc.), as well as provitamin A, ascorbic acid, tannins (up to 2 .14%) and colorants, bitterness and mineral salts. The seeds contain up to 30% fast-drying fatty oil.

The chemical composition of the plant is currently being studied. The quantitative content of biologically active substances in the five-lobed motherwort depends on the vegetation phase - the maximum amount accumulates in the flowering phase, as well as on the growing conditions.

Spreading

The range covers Scandinavia (in the eastern part, rarely), the Baltic states, and Central Europe. In Russia, it is distributed in the European part, the Crimea, Western Siberia, and the Caucasus.

It is common in all natural and administrative regions of the Saratov Right Bank. In the Rtishchevo district, it was noted on the outskirts of the city of Rtishchevo.

Features of biology and ecology

Ruderal plant, its typical habitats are wastelands, garbage places, ravines, roadside strips, settlements. It also grows along edges, clearings, clearings in coniferous and mixed forests, downed meadows, banks of reservoirs, pastures.

It blooms in June - August, the duration of flowering of one inflorescence is 15-25 days. After mowing, secondary flowering is observed. The fruits ripen in July - September. Propagated mainly by seeds. Seeds retain high germination for 5-8 years, after which it sharply decreases.

Economic importance and application

In medicine

Information about the use of motherwort for medicinal purposes dates back to the 10th century. It was used as a remedy for "beating of the heart", "heaviness of the stomach" and catarrh of the lungs, and also as a sedative.

Motherwort preparations in medical practice were first used as a cardiotonic and cardiac rhythm-regulating agent for cardiovascular neurosis, angina pectoris and hypertension. And only at the beginning of the 20th century, motherwort began to be used as a sedative.

For medicinal purposes, motherwort herb is used.

The aerial part in practical medicine is used for cardiosclerosis, myocarditis, and myocardial dystrophy, psychoasthenia, and neurasthenia, increased reactivity, for heart defects and Graves' disease. In gynecology - with hypomenstrual syndrome and pathological menopause with severe vegetovascular dystonia. A decoction of the roots is used for dysentery.

In folk medicine, it is used as a sedative for heart disease, hypertension, diuretic, hemostatic; with epilepsy, anemia, shortness of breath, impotence; infusion - for gastrointestinal diseases. Juice - for cardiovascular neuroses, heart defects, hypertension, cardiosclerosis, myocarditis; as a sedative for insomnia, hysteria; with mild forms of Graves' disease. Included in the soothing tea. Used in homeopathy.

An infusion, tincture and liquid extract from the leaves is a substitute for valerian tincture.

In other areas

The fatty oil from the seeds is suitable for making high-quality varnishes, as well as for impregnating paper and fabrics to make them waterproof. From the plant, you can get a fiber that is close in quality to the fiber of flax and Chinese hemp - ramie. The aerial part stains the fabrics in a dark green color.
