And now in more detail

What is XL-PIPE energy saving electric wet floor heating?

The peculiarity of this underfloor heating system is in the structure of the heating element.

This is a pipe made of structured polyethylene (diameter 20mm), which is filled with a coolant. Inside, a seven-core cable made of an alloy of chromium and nickel, covered with highly resistant Teflon, is inserted in its entire length. Pipes with cable and heat carrier are hermetically sealed. The coolant does not move and therefore this system does not need a pump, boiler or collector. Antifreeze of a special composition is used as a coolant. When the liquid is heated, an increased pressure occurs, which contributes to rapid heating and uniform distribution of heat (bubble boiling). Heating occurs very quickly, since the volume of liquid is small, and the heat output is high. That's why This underfloor heating system reaches operating temperatures much faster than the others.

* Water heating systems have a minus - uneven heating. In the XL-PIPE system, the temperature of the liquid, and hence the floor, is the same throughout.

** Electric heating systems also have a minus - they are afraid of locking. The XL-PIPE system is not afraid of locking. You can move furniture and any large equipment wherever you want.

The system is specially designed for the main heating of cottages and houses, but can also be used as floor heating to increase comfort. XL-PIPE warm floors are absolutely safe for the environment and human health, do not emit carbon dioxide, do not emit electromagnetic waves.

The XL PIPE underfloor heating system works autonomously, only from electricity. It automatically maintains the required temperature in the house. You can easily set different temperature conditions in the rooms.

It's also completely safe.: in the screed it cannot lead to fire, and the electromagnetic field of the system is several times less than the maximum permissible values.

The coolant inside the pipes accumulates heat, which allows the system to cool down 2 times slower than cable floors;

Thanks to the correct distribution of heat flows, it is possible to achieve savings of 12% compared to radiator heating;

From 8% to 15% of energy is saved due to the absence of heat losses due to the circulation of liquid, which is present in classic water floors and radiator heating;

Spot heating by zones: you no longer need to turn on the entire system
home heating for heating individual rooms;

The important point is that it is possible repair of some part of the system without opening the floor!
Repair of the heating element or system coolant is carried out through the junction box. In case of mechanical damage to the pipe itself, a 2-terminal coupling is installed in place of the damage and the system continues to work.

What if the system fails?

A question that worries many is the maintainability of the system. In this case, the XL-PIPE system has an advantage over cable underfloor heating.

So what can go wrong and how can it be repaired.

Damage to end sleeves. With XL-PIPE, they can be replaced via a mounting box in one place. But our systems are factory-wired, unlike classic water systems, so these problems practically do not arise.

AT Recently, hybrid heating systems have begun to appear on the heating equipment market, combining an electric and water heating system. A representative of such a hybrid system is the XL-PIPE liquid floor heating system, the manufacturer of which is the Korean company DAEWOO ENERTEC. Here we will talk about whether it is worth installing this system in this article.

At first glance, an ideal system for underfloor heating, but what happens in practice?

Disadvantages of the XL-PIPE system

In the XL-PIPE system, the temperature of the liquid, and hence the floor, is the same throughout. This is a disadvantage of all electrical systems. Our main task, when installing heating, is to make a barrier to the cold that comes from the outer contour (walls, windows, doors). Therefore, it is necessary to apply the maximum temperature to these places. It makes no sense to heat the internal walls. In this sense, the usual water-heated floor is just that. The temperature of the coolant decreases as the pipe moves away from the walls, making the entire area of \u200b\u200bthe room comfortable.

The XL-PIPE system is not afraid of locking. I agree that in an ordinary water floor there are locking circuits, but this happens from an incorrect calculation of the system and its unqualified installation.

For maintenance of the XL-PIPE system, special technical boxes are provided, which are mounted flush with the floor and are designed for its maintenance. You immediately need to tune in that you will have such a box in your room, and if there are several circuits, then not one.

With the XL-PIPE system, the contours are already cut at the factory and are delivered ready-made. This suggests that you will never be able to accurately select a system according to the calculation. You will always be forced to buy more, and these are the costs for the pipe itself, and then for electricity.

The XL-PIPE system works only for heating, while the boiler used to heat the coolant in the water-heated floor can simultaneously work in the hot water supply system.

Be prepared that companies that work with the XL-PIPE system will refuse you general construction work (pouring the screed), as happened to me. In this case, you will either have to purchase polystyrene foam, mesh, mixture yourself and make a screed or look for another company.

"Energy efficiency" of the XL-PIPE system

Energy efficiency compared to cable electric floor. As an advantage, the manufacturer focuses on the fact that the coolant inside the pipes accumulates heat, which allows the system to cool down 2 times slower than cable floors. In my opinion, complete cunning, because. water appeared in the system between the floor and the cable, and additional energy must be spent to heat it. In addition, the coolant does not significantly affect the rate of cooling of the floor. Everything will depend on the material with which your floor will be covered. When turned on, the system will always consume the power put into it, while many electric boilers can be stepwise adjusted in terms of power and connected as needed.

Heat transfer medium for XL-PIPE system

The XL-PIPE system uses a specially formulated antifreeze as the coolant. The manufacturer does not say which one. This is most likely due to nucleate boiling, which the manufacturer presents as an advantage, without saying that nucleate boiling in a closed environment also has disadvantages. By installing this system in your home, you will be forever tied to the supplier of this coolant. Conventional water floors are filled with ethylene glycol-based automotive antifreeze, which can be purchased at any auto parts store.

Installation of the XL-PIPE system

When pouring the screed, in ordinary water floors, excess pressure is created in the pipe so that the concrete does not deform the pipe with its weight. Here you cannot do this. Theoretically, when the pipe is compressed, the cable can come into contact with the pipe, excessively heating its walls. It is impossible to foresee what consequences this may have.

Inertness of the XL-PIPE system

The system is intended for permanent residence, as heating the floor takes a significant amount of time. If you visit the house on short trips, this system is not your option. A system with conventional water floors and a boiler, in this case, allows you to install additional radiators that will quickly heat the air in the room until the underfloor heating takes over the main function.

I hope that this article will help you figure out what the XL-PIPE liquid floor heating system is. In the next article, I will talk about .

When choosing the type of underfloor heating, you have to decide whether to install a water or electric underfloor heating. Electric is easier to install, but expensive during operation. You have to pay a little monthly for water, but its installation is complicated and very expensive (if you also install a boiler, a mixing unit, a collector). But today there is a symbiosis of both systems, combining the advantages of both systems: water (liquid) electric floor heating. By the way, this is the only option for a water-heated floor without a pump in any other version, the system will not work. There are two offers on the market today:

  • From the Korean campaign Daewoo Enertec. Her product is called XL Pipe (X-L Pipe).
  • The UNIMAT AQUA capillary floor is from another Korean rather famous Caleo campaign, but you need to take into account that products of the Russian branch of this campaign are sold in our country.

The systems are the same only in that pipes filled with liquid are hidden, and that the coolant is heated by electricity. But the heating elements themselves and the method of heating the liquid are different. Read more about each system below.

Liquid Electric Floor XL Pipe

The novelty of this system is in the structure of the heating element: pipes made of structured polyethylene (thick-walled with a diameter of 20 mm) are filled with a heat carrier. A heating cable is inserted inside the entire length. This is not an ordinary cable, but seven strands of chromium-nickel alloy with a Teflon sheath. Pipes with cable and heat carrier are hermetically sealed. The coolant is static and does not move, therefore, in the system of water electric underfloor heating, a pump is not needed, as well as a boiler and a collector.

Underfloor heating XL Pipe (X-L Pipe) from the Korean campaign Daewoo Enertec - electric-water heating

Antifreeze is used as a coolant, so it is more correct to call this system “liquid electric floor heating”, but this is not the point. Everything should be installed in a screed: this way the heat spreads more evenly. It turns out that with this design, the main drawback of water heating is eliminated: uneven heating, because the temperature of the liquid, and hence the floor, is the same throughout. This option also does not have a common “disease” of electric heating - an electric-water heated floor is not afraid of locking, that is, you can put and move furniture and large-sized equipment wherever you want.

Underfloor heating "Daewoo" can be used as the main heating or just floor heating to increase comfort: the heating power depends on the step of laying the heating pipes, which you choose yourself.

The composition of the system and the principle of operation

As in any heating system, a temperature controller (thermostat) with a floor temperature sensor is required to operate and maintain a stable temperature. They are installed in the same way as for conventional electric floors, a special thermostat is needed for this particular type of equipment.

The principle of operation of XL Pipe is as follows: when the power is turned on, the heating cable heats the coolant (this is a special antifreeze composition). Heating occurs very quickly: the volume of liquid is very small, and the thermal power is decent. When a liquid is heated in a closed volume, an increased pressure arises, which contributes to faster heating and uniform distribution of heat (bubble boiling). Therefore, such a warm floor reaches operating temperatures much faster than usual.

The manufacturer of water-electric underfloor heating Daewoo Enertec guarantees the reliability, environmental friendliness and safety of its system. To absorb the excess pressure that occurs when the coolant is heated, a damping system has been developed and patented, which stabilizes the state of the heating element. Probably, you can trust them - the warranty period is 10 years, and the service life is declared 50 years. The difficulty is that while the system is new and the reviews of the owners of this miracle could not be found.

But the best part is this: they say that the electric-water heated floor can be repaired. True, only service workers can carry out work - special equipment is used. But what pleases is that for repairs it is not necessary to break the entire screed, and it will take several hours to repair the damage. If the integrity of the cable is damaged, the leakage zone is easily determined: the liquid seeps out and a stain appears on the screed. At this point, you will need to break the screed. Then, having opened the mounting box, carry out some manipulations using special equipment. The repair work itself is described in the video.

What is the cost-effectiveness of XL Pipe

System manufacturers claim that the system is more economical to operate than electric floors (20-30% less electricity bills) and less expensive to install than water floors (no boiler, mixing and manifold assemblies or circulation pump needed).

Thus, savings consists of two parts:

  • Less financial costs at the installation stage (compared to the installation of water-heated floors).
  • Less monthly heating costs (compared to electric heating).

Due to which the installation costs are lower - it’s understandable: you don’t need a boiler, a mixing and collector unit, a circulation pump. Requires electric water pipe and thermostat with temperature sensor. But about saving on heating, you need to explain: since the coolant does not move, it heats up very quickly. And no losses for air heating at the mixing, collector unit. All heat goes to floor heating. Therefore, the costs are less. At least that's what the manufacturers say.

Installation of XL Pipe (X-L Pipe)

The entire installation sequence repeats the process of installing water systems to the smallest detail:

As you can see, water electric underfloor heating in the installation is practically no different from a water heating device (with the exception of connecting a thermostat and electrical assembly of the system). After the screed has dried (28 days or less), you can lay the floor covering. You can see the installation sequence in the video.

Capillary warm floor UNIMAT AQUA

These water electric underfloor heating have a different principle of operation. Here the main difference is the diameter of the pipes: it is very small, hence the name - capillary. These tubes are connected to a small device that simultaneously heats the coolant, controls its temperature and creates pressure in the system (closed system).

Since the diameter of the pipes is small, there is a small amount of water in the system - up to 6 liters (necessarily distilled) and a small heater (no more than 2.4 kW) can handle its heating. Therefore, to install this version of the liquid-electric floor, a separate input is not required, although it is better to connect it through the RCD and the machine.

The maximum heating area is 20m2. Therefore, the system is not very suitable for large rooms, although you can install several devices that work independently of each other. The warranty period is 5 years.

The composition of the capillary floor system and its capabilities

In order to assemble this type of heating, you will need at least two sets: basic and additional. The UNIMAT AQUA basic kit includes a complete control unit, two pieces of a connecting tube and an assembly kit (sleeves, tees and clamps), with which the pipeline is assembled and connected. An additional set is one or two bays of capillary tubes for different areas (from 10m 2 to 20m 2). In addition, for laying, you will need a heater, a damper tape, a heat-reflecting layer and fasteners for pipes, as well as a cement-sand mortar with a plasticizer for pouring the screed (or a special composition).

Basic set of capillary floor UNIMAT AQUA

The main advantage of this system is the sufficiently large functionality of the control unit. Here is what the capillary system control unit can do:

  • Maintain the anti-freeze mode (temperature +15 ° C).
  • Control either the state of the coolant or the temperature in the room of your choice.
  • Maintain the power that you set yourself when starting the system (factory setting is 2.4kW, and you can set from 0.1kW to 2.4kW).
  • Using the timer, you can set the time to turn off the system.

UNIMAT AQUA installation

As with electric heating systems, everything must begin with the choice of the installation location of the control unit. It is located on the wall, at a height of 1-1.2 meters from the floor level. The mounting method is hinged, so holes do not need to be made. It is required to securely attach the mounting plate, that's all. Please note that the device is plugged into an outlet, so choose a place not far from it.

Connecting tubes from the capillary floor will be connected to the control unit and for their laying, strobes in the wall will be required (or you can lay them in a plastic mounting box fixed on the wall).

Installation diagram of capillary floors from Caleo (click on the image to enlarge)

Installation of capillary tubes is standard: in a coupler. No differences from the water heated device or from the method described above. The same requirements for the base (should be even) and an excellent degree of thermal insulation is desirable. "Pie" and the installation sequence are similar. The laying scheme in the screed is a double snake (see the figure), the laying step is 10-12 cm, the distance from the walls is 10-15 cm and more. After laying the heating pipes, they are connected using components from the installation kit with connecting pipes (included in the basic kit). Connecting tubes are easy to distinguish - they have a square section. For greater maintainability of the system, it is desirable to place the docking point in an installation box fixed to the floor. And from it, lead solid pipes to the control unit (into a gate or mounting box on the wall). On the control unit there are special small pipes, on which the connecting tubes are pulled.

The control unit is the heart and brain of the electro-water floor capillary system

The next stage of the installation is filling the system. Distilled water is poured into the inlet. Then the system is tested: the heating temperature is set on the control unit and the system starts working. After checking, the heating is turned off, the water is not drained. With a cooled (but not cold) coolant, the screeds begin to fill. Its thickness is from 3cm to 5cm. It is possible to turn on the capillary system of the warm floor only after the screed has completely dried (at least 28 days).

Advantages and disadvantages of a capillary floor heating system

This version of the water-electric floor can only be used to increase comfort. For the main heating, it does not have enough power. The advantage is the safety of the system (no electricity in the floor), which allows it to be installed in wet rooms (eg in the washing department of a bathhouse) without any restrictions. On the other hand, the shortcomings of water heated floors remain to some extent: the water comes from the block is hotter, and therefore the floor warms up unevenly. The disadvantage is not so pronounced due to the recommended double snake when laying pipes, and also because of the small volume of the system, which allows maintaining a small temperature difference between the supply and return pipelines.

There is no data on the maintainability of the system, although the main problem node - the joining of heating and connecting pipes - is recommended to be placed in a separate accessible box, which provides for the possibility of repair. All other parts that can fail are located in the control unit, so repair is possible.

Results

Water electric underfloor heating is an interesting floor heating option in all aspects. XL Pipe (X-L Pipe) seems to be more advantageous, but it also costs more, but it provides for the possibility of using it as the main heating (there is enough power with good insulation). If you just need a comfortable floor temperature in relatively small rooms, including those with high humidity, then the UNIMAT AQUA capillary warm floor looks more acceptable, although this is your choice.

When choosing one of the most widely used types of underfloor heating today, many have a desire to increase efficiency due to the high reliability of electrical systems and the cost-effectiveness of heating water equipment. We managed to combine the advantages of each of them with the help of liquid electric heating XL PIPE for large rooms or capillary for rooms up to 20 m2.

The principle of operation of such a heating system is that an electric current is passed through the heating element, as a result of which the coolant is heated at a relatively high speed. Due to the fact that the space is airtight, and heat losses are minimized, the process takes place with maximum energy efficiency. At the same time, the screed and the floor covering are heated. As a result, the floor surface acts as a radiator that heats the room.

Electric water floor heating device

The electric water floor consists of the following elements:

  • coolant (antifreeze is used);
  • pipe made of cross-linked polyethylene with a diameter of 20 mm (;
  • pressure absorption device;
  • a heating element, which consists of two wires of a high-temperature-resistant cable with Teflon insulation (in most cases, its power is 40 W per linear meter;
  • end sleeves at both ends of the tube;
  • thermostat (connected with two wires coming out of the end sleeve).

Benefits of using a water electric floor

High efficiency compared to other underfloor heating systems

  • The liquid heat-insulated floor allows to provide longer heat accumulation during work in comparison with cable systems (4 against 2 hours).
  • No heat loss due to the absence of coolant circulation, in contrast to classical types of equipment.
  • Ease of repair and minimal maintenance costs due to the possibility of providing easy access to the place of electrical connections - the junction box.
  • There is no need to install a circulation pump.

Possibility of repair without opening the screed

Water-electric underfloor heating in most cases allows for repair work through the junction box. This allows you to perform such work as replacing the heating cable, termination, pour antifreeze. In case of mechanical damage to the pipe, it is possible to install a double-ended clamping fitting, which will allow the system to continue full operation.

High reliability of the scheme of a water-heated floor from electricity

  • The service life of the systems is about 50 years. Most manufacturers (Unimat Aqua, Caleo, Arnold Rak) provide a 10 year warranty.
  • The minimum risk of burning out the heating cable, as it is located in such a way that it is constantly in contact with the coolant.
  • It is possible to automate the operation of the capillary heating system.
  • High level of operational safety.
  • There is no danger of freezing of the system in the absence of heating during the cold season. This allows us to consider the installation of XL PIPE or capillary systems as the optimal step for country houses, which are used seasonally.

Despite the similar laying method, the principle of operation of the electric water-heated floor ensures the stability of the heating temperature both at the inlet and outlet of the circuit. This ensures uniform heating of the surface. In addition, it is worth noting that this particular type of heating can be used in combination with any type of coating. In order to find out more detailed information about the advantages of installing capillary or XL PIPE heating systems, it is enough to consult with a specialist. Give us a call and make an informed decision.

So, electric is much easier to install and operate. As for water heating, such heating is expensive in cost, however, it is much superior to electric heating in operation, especially if the system is equipped with a mixing unit, a collector, etc. However, the engineers don't stop there. The symbiosis of these two systems has borne fruit - water electric underfloor heating XL Pipe. This technology combines all the advantages of the two systems known to us, from this article you will learn about them in more detail.

New to the market XL Pipe

The novelty lies in the special structure of the heating element. It consists of a pipe, which is made of structured polyethylene, its diameter is 20 mm. The interior of the pipe is filled with coolant. The entire length of the cable is inserted inside. This is not the cable used in electric floor heating. It consists of 7 strands of chromium-nickel alloy with a Teflon sheath. The whole structure is hermetically sealed. The coolant inside the pipe is static and does not move.

One of the features of the XL Pipe heating system is that there is no need to install a circulation pump, collector and boiler for floor heating.

Unlike water floor heating, where water can be the coolant, only antifreeze can serve as the coolant in liquid-electric heating. The entire piping system is mounted under the screed. Due to this, heat will be evenly distributed over the surface. This development is devoid of the main drawback of the water system - uneven heating, because antifreeze always has a stable temperature without fluctuations. Also, electric-water heating is devoid of another disadvantage of electric heating. XL Pipe is not afraid of locking. If you put large appliances and furniture on the floor wherever you want, this will not affect the quality of heating.

XL Pipe heating can be installed as the main heating in the house. If you need to increase the heating power, then reduce the laying step.

How does it work

Fluid-electric heating is similar to other heating systems in that it is also equipped with a thermostat and a temperature sensor to control the temperature. Only in this case a special thermostat is required, which is sold complete with the XL Pipe system. How does the heating system work?

When the heating cable is connected, it heats the coolant. Due to the fact that the volume of the coolant is small, heating occurs very quickly. In this case, a high heat transfer is observed. In the process of heating the liquid, high pressure is created inside. This, in turn, contributes to a uniform and rapid distribution of thermal energy (known as nucleate boiling).

As a result, the XL Pipe system reaches operating temperature very quickly. But how does the system deal with excess pressure? The manufacturer has developed and patented a redemption system, which is to stabilize the state of heating. The service life of XL Pipe underfloor heating is 50 years, and the warranty period is 10 years. The only problem is that this method of heating is new and does not have many reviews.

The main feature of electric-water heating is that it can be repaired. And for this you do not need to break the entire screed. If the wire has broken through, then the place of the leak is very easy to determine. A wet spot will come to the surface, and it is precisely here that repair work will need to be carried out.

Only service specialists can repair the XL Pipe water-electric heating. It will be problematic to do this task on your own.

Some technical characteristics of the system are at the same time advantages that are worth mentioning separately:

  • Profitability. There are no heat losses. 100% of heat energy is sent to the room. Pipes retain heat for a long time, thereby reducing energy consumption. Savings are also achieved by the fact that it is not necessary to mount the boiler, pump, collector and other components.
  • Ease of installation and operation. The heating system can be laid under any floor covering. There are no restrictions here. If malfunctions occur, repairs can be made through the operation panel.
  • Safety. The system does not emit electromagnetic waves dangerous to humans.
  • Long service life. The pipe system has high strength and rupture resistance, as there is a high pressure absorption technology. Pipes withstand frosts down to -20°C.
  • Autonomy. It is possible to carry out the installation of XL Pipe water electric underfloor heating both in houses and in apartments as the main heating.

Mounting

The whole process of installing a warm floor is quite simple. It can be done in several consecutive steps:

  1. The first step is to insulate the floor. The walls around the entire perimeter of the room are also insulated.
  2. A heat-reflecting metallized layer is laid on the rough screed.
  3. Next, a system for fixing pipes is mounted. It can be a poppy grid or a special mounting tape.
  4. At this stage, the cable is laid. The ends of the pipes are brought into a special mounting box, which is installed on the floor. The principle of installation is similar, as is the installation / connection of a thermostat for electric floor heating.
  5. Pouring underfloor heating screed. This is the final stage, which should be taken seriously.

So, after a short review of the new technology, we can conclude: XL Pipe water-electric floor heating is really the best heating system in existence. However, time will tell. Based on research and a few user reviews, this system is gradually taking its niche in the underfloor heating market. Of course, the prices for such heating may seem high, however, the quality fully justifies itself. If you are already using the benefits of such a heating system, then please write reviews about the work of XL Pipe at the end of this article.
