Once again this week I became convinced that the parallel passages in the Synodal translation were a genius. We are talking about parallel passages in the traditional edition, which is usually published in facsimile, where there is a column with references in the middle, and where, for example, the Gospel of John ends on page 129 of the New Testament (check this information in your Bible, and that place , which will be discussed below). In the new editions of the Synodal translation from the RBO or the Patriarchate, a slightly different list of parallel passages is used. The most popular work in the English-speaking world is Treasury of Scripture Knowledge (TSK), a very detailed and well-compiled list of more than 640,000 (!) Bible cross-references. Can you imagine such a well connected themed website, with so many relevant internal links? You can find places in TSK where the first part of a verse refers to one Bible verse and the second part to another. The verses are so detailed!
What is the genius of the one who compiled the parallel passages for the Synodal translation?
Its genius lies in the fact that the references are mostly not technical (when one verse refers to a similar one), they are not banal (which the reader can make himself), but spiritual, that is, these references really help to understand a particular verse from the Bible, look at him from a different point of view. This is when a parallel place complements the verse under study. These parallel references have repeatedly helped me both better understand and love the perfect word of God. For a long time I made it a rule, while studying a passage, to go through all the links (this does not take much time, because many places are usually already known) to see if I missed anything. The author-compiler of these parallel passages really knew the Bible well. Perhaps he was not alone, and most likely it was a team of authors (if you have any information about this, please let me know!).
And the link that struck me this week is this. We studied in the church the book of Isaiah, the 8th chapter. There in verse 6 there are words: "Because this people neglect the waters of Siloam, flowing quietly...". When I looked at the parallels, I saw two references: Nehemiah 3:15 and John 9:11. In the book of Nehemiah, we will not find useful information about the waters of Siloam - there is information only about where they flow. And what about the Gospel of John? It turns out that in the story of the healing of the blind man, after Jesus anointed his eyes with clay, the Lord commanded him to go and wash in Siloam. The Lord did not neglect Siloam, but considered that this blind man should have gone there. But the people of Israel at the time of Isaiah neglected Siloam, and God rebuked the people for this.
How the compiler could remember a verse from the Gospel of John in his pre-computer age, I do not know. But he's great. Probably, the given example is not the most convincing - I will try to remember other places that helped me earlier. And so, I again became convinced this week that the parallel passages in the Synodal translation were composed by a genius. And thank God that the parts of the Bible fit together in such a wonderful way.
